Can I claim my motor vehicle?

There several car expenditures that can be claimed, such as distance (km) while driving between job sites or carrying job specific tools and equipment where there is no secure lock-up facility at your place of business. We will make sure to apply the best possible scenario, but remember that driving to and from work is not applicable for claiming in most circumstances.

If I am using the car for work related purposes, do I need to keep a log book?

Yes, if you are intending on claiming under the logbook method (other method: Cents per km), please make sure to keep a general log book that includes distance and associated receipts, e.g. fuel, car registration, any maintenance or repairs etc. This logbook is required to be kept for 12 weeks consecutively and every trip should be recorded i.e. personal or work related.

You also need to record the opening kms of your vehicle at 1 July XX (start of financial year or date you purchased this if you purchased during the financial year) and at the end of the financial year 30 June 20XX for your log book to be correct.

Do I have to lodge tax return if I had no income or earned less than the tax threshold?
You are still required to notify the ATO by submitting a “Non-lodgement advice”. This lets the ATO know that you were not required to lodge a tax return that year.
What if I have outstanding tax returns?
Please let us know as soon as possible if you have any outstanding tax returns you wish to lodge – this will help you to avoid any unnecessary penalties or charges.
Can you deduct fees out of my refund?

No, unfortunately this requires further administration and in order to keep costs low, we have avoided this option. You will be able to claim all of our fees on your next tax return as well.

What if I forgot to claim several deductions from previous tax return?

We can help you with lodging an amendment of your tax return. These specific changes should be applied within 2 years of your requested tax return lodgement date, however, sometimes special circumstances could help with an extension request.

How much can I claim without receipts?

In normal circumstances, ATO allows up to $300 worth of deductions to be claimed without any substantiation documentation. There is no other deduction available if you do not have any receipts.

How long do I need to keep my receipts for?

Generally you need to keep your receipts for 5 years. We strongly recommend storing them somewhere safe on your computer to prevent fading to keep your receipts legible. If you are running a business you need to keep your receipts for 7 years. Unfortunately the ATO will not accept your bank statement in place of receipts or invoices.
